REAL ID 101: What Tennessee Drivers Need to Know Before May 7

Starting May 7, 2025, federal REAL ID requirements will be enforced across the United States. If you plan to fly within the country or visit certain government buildings, you will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification.

This is the first post in our “Ready to Fly? Navigating REAL ID and Travel Safety in 2025” series, and it covers what Tennessee drivers need to know to stay prepared and avoid disruptions.

What Is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a federally approved version of your driver’s license or identification card. It was created as part of a national security law passed in 2005. After several delays, the final deadline for enforcement is now set for May 7, 2025.

If your ID is not REAL ID-compliant by that date, you will need a passport or another approved document to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings.

Look for a star inside a circle in the upper right corner of your license. That indicates your ID is REAL ID-compliant.

Do you have your real id star?

Why May 7, 2025, Matters

After May 7:

  • You will need a REAL ID or another accepted form of ID to board domestic flights.
  • You may be denied entry to certain government buildings or military bases without one.
  • Delays and last-minute complications could affect your travel if you are not prepared.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Tennessee Department of Safety both recommend updating your license as soon as possible.

What You Need to Bring to Get a REAL ID in Tennessee

To apply for a REAL ID in Tennessee, you must go in person to a Driver Services Center or a participating County Clerk office.

Here is what you will need to bring:

  1. Proof of identity

(Examples: certified U.S. birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport)

  2. Proof of Social Security number

(Examples: Social Security card or a W-2 with full Social Security number)

  3. Two documents showing Tennessee residency

(Examples: utility bill, mortgage statement, bank document)

  4. Proof of name change (if applicable)

(Examples: marriage certificate, divorce decree, or legal name change court order)

You can view the full list of acceptable documents at tn.gov/driver-services/real-id

Where to Apply

You can get a REAL ID at:

  • Any full-service Tennessee Driver Services Center
  • Select County Clerk offices across the state

Appointments are strongly encouraged, especially as the deadline approaches. To find a location near you, visit tn.gov/driver-services/locations

Only a Few Days Left – Act Now if You Still Need a REAL ID

With the May 7 deadline just days away, time is running out to get your REAL ID before the new rules take effect. If you haven’t upgraded your license yet and plan to fly soon or visit federal buildings, now is the time to take action.

Appointments may be limited this close to the deadline, but walk-in options are available at many Driver Services Centers and County Clerk offices. Bring all your required documents and be prepared for longer wait times.

If you don’t plan to travel or visit secure federal facilities, your current license will still work for driving and most everyday uses in Tennessee. But if flying is in your near future, having a REAL ID is the most convenient way to be ready.
