With the summer season officially in full swing, many families have opted to adjust or even cancel their travel plans due to COVID-19. And while social distancing and other non-contact measures are still strongly encouraged, the summer does not have to be spent in isolation at home. Below are some great ways to enjoy the summer travel season while mitigating risks and staying safe during the pandemic.
- Avoid Flights and Other Public Modes of Transportation. Driving is currently the safest way to prevent exposure to COVID while traveling. However, it still is not risk-free. Gas stations, public restrooms and roadside diners all carry potential risks. Experts advise to make travel plans close to home and even consider well-planned day trips to reduce the potential risk from being on the road.
- Travel To Locations Where Others Are Not Going. Outdoor vacations and camping trips to remote locations are great alternatives to other popular (and crowded) destinations. Enjoying a stay in a remote location is a great way to spend quality time with family and loved ones — all while avoiding crowds and limiting potential exposure to the virus.
- Bring Cleaning Supplies to Disinfect Your Lodging Area. If you will be staying in a hotel, Airbnb or cabin, do not place your trust in others to properly clean your room(s) for you. Bring along cleaning supplies and your own linens so you can disinfect and prepare your living space upon arrival.
- Rent an RV. RV rentals are in high demand, but if you’re lucky enough to land a reservation, they are a great alternative to staying in traditional lodging spaces. The COVID-19 virus does not thrive in high heat environments, so RVs can be left in the sun with the windows up for several days prior to travel and will help reduce potential exposure from past occupants.
- Have a Plan B Destination in Place. Be sure to have a second destination in mind in case your first choice is too crowded. Remaining flexible and the willingness to alter travel plans at the last moment will go a long way in staying safe and avoiding large crowds.
While the above suggestions are very good ways to limit virus exposure, they still carry risks. Be sure to stay on top of the latest CDC recommendations in protecting yourself and others. Additionally, be sure to keep updated with the latest re-openings and restrictions for the State of Tennessee. Following the advice from experts and implementing safety measures for yourself and your family will ensure a hassle and stress-free summer travel season. Stay safe and enjoy.
