What Is the REAL ID Act?

After multiple extensions, enforcement is now fully in effect as of May 7, 2025.

- Enter federal buildings, courthouses, and secure government facilities
- Visit military bases (unless you have a different federally accepted form of ID)
Without a REAL ID—or an approved alternative like a passport—you may be legally denied access to these places.

- Refusal of entry due to non-compliant ID is legally enforceable at the federal level.
This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about meeting legal standards for identity in federally controlled spaces.
What REAL ID Does Not Do
There are some common misconceptions. Let’s clear those up.
❌ REAL ID does not replace a passport for international travel
❌ It does not function as a national ID card
❌ It does not affect your ability to vote or register to vote
❌ It does not store personal or biometric data on a chip
REAL ID is strictly for identity verification in specific domestic and federal settings.
Staying Informed = Staying Compliant
Ignorance of the law is never a defense. If you arrive at a federal building or airport without an acceptable ID, you can be legally denied entry—and may miss a flight, hearing, or important meeting.
